The biggest complaint that I hear about Clive Cussler's books are how they are all the same. I don't like how he puts himself in his books, but it's more annoying than truly detrimental to the story. It is a deus ex machina, but other authors hit you over your head with their versions of moving the book along at a place where they're confounded. Cussler's sometime tendency to have his characters overcome extreme adversity easily, or perform perfectly are also chief among his criticisms. My biggest grievance is also what I consider a foil to his greatest strength. He has a tendency to take an idea in popular culture, and not only embrace it, but run with it so fully that I could imagine him as a lawyer verbally flaying the jurors to force them to agree with him. This is in such contrast to his competence in looking at various scientific data from a unique perspective. The dexterity in which he is usually able to engage his readers with his rare mindset is sorely missing. This book seems to combine his least desirable traits, and reinforce his detractors arguments on his writing ability. When reading some of his earlier works, you can enjoy them because he was just learning his trade craft, but overcame his faults with swagger, flair, and an engaging story. Overall, this book seems that he wrote it because he had to, not because he wanted to. Later books in the Fargo series, such as "The Solomon Curse" and "Eye of Heaven" return to the style that made me such a fan of Cussler's. If this is someones first Cussler novel, it may be enjoyable, but after reading more than 40 of his books, it was disappointing to me. If you didn't like this novel, don't give up on him.
